This is how to upgrade the Linux Mint Kernel to a newer version. For simplicity I will use Kernel’s already compiled for Linux Mint from kernel.ubuntu.com. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the kernel version you want.

Now download the below files making sure you get the same versions:

linux-headers-*_all.deb
linux-headers-*-generic_*_amd64.deb
linux-image-*-generic_*_amd64.deb

Now move the 3 above files into their own folder “kernel”:

mkdir kernel
mv linux-*.deb ../kernel
cd kernel

Now to install the new kernel and update GRUB to boot the new kernel:

sudo dpkg -i linux-*.deb
update-grub

Now reboot and check the new kernel running with ‘uname -a’.
